Masterson’s Tavern , positioned in the vibrant core of Moonee Ponds, promotes itself as a chic “hipster” locale , but my latest trip at this establishment quickly devolved into an unforgettable, terrible experience. While the bar may present a friendly façade, what I experienced behind its entrance was disturbing and far below any standard .
The State of Affairs: Grimy and Neglected
From the moment I stepped inside , it was evident that cleanliness was not a priority at this bar . The surfaces were tacky , and a overpowering stench of stale beer and filthy restrooms filled the entire venue . Reeking of a mixture of ammonia , decay and illness . The serving zone , which should be the primary feature of any pub, was overflowing with soiled cups and refuse that looked like it hadn’t been cleaned in weeks . The restroom was in even a more revolting state —overflowing , with a shattered handle and surfaces marked in what I can only assume was feces.
It wasn’t just a one-off bad night either. Based on the experiences shared online and speaking with locals , it seems that the standard of sanitation (or additional resources lack thereof) at this bar is a long-standing issue . Many patrons have reported witnessing insects darting across the serving surface and evidence of rodent infestations in the bar and house area . For a business that caters to patrons, these issues are absolutely intolerable and raise serious concerns about the safety of the food and drinks .

The bar is managed by Pete Cornwell, who also holds a high-profile job as a risk manager at Westpac. Unfortunately, his reputation a fantastic read in the corporate world is clouded by a disturbing pattern of misconduct in his personal and business life .
